Ex-Penn. Judges Ordered to Pay Hefty Fine for Sending Kids to Jail for Kickbacks  

Two former judges, Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan, were ordered to pay upwards of $200 million for their role in a kick-back scheme that saw children needlessly sent to for-profit jails. So reports NBC News.

Gavel Money Corrupt hammer gde15c7ded 640The scheme involved the shuttering of a county-run detention center, $2.8 million in illegal payments from the owner and builder of the for-profit jails and a blanket “zero-tolerance” policy ensuring a steady pipeline of children being sent to the facilities. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court tossed close to 4,000 convictions after the scheme was unearthed.
