States May Prohibit License Plate Designs: Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court held that the First Amendment does not prohibit states that sell specialty license plates from refusing designs like the Confederate Flag. So reports USA Today.

The lawsuit, filed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, challenged Texas’s refusal to allow the group’s license plate. The majority opinion, which was signed by some of the court’s most liberal and conservative judges, categorized license plates as “government speech,” which need not maintain viewpoint neutrality.
