Petitions Filed to Recognize Chimps as Persons

An animal rights group recently filed a habeas corpus petition—a writ requiring that an unlawfully detained prisoner be brought before a judge—on behalf of a chimpanzee in captivity. So CNN reports.

The courts where the rights groups filed the petitions have thrown them out, but the petitions may fare better in the appeals courts. In this piece, CNN legal analyst Danny Cavallos explains why, in light of precedent, the argument the petitions are based on is more compelling than he initially thought.
