Rich Teen Drunk Driver Kills 4, Gets Probation

A speeding, drunk driving Texas teen who caused a crash killing four people has been sentenced to probation. His lawyers argued that he should not be sent to jail because he suffered from ‘affluenza’ as a result of his parents teaching him that wealth buys privilege. So reports the Star-Telegram.

The teen was driving a pickup truck over the speed limit and with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit. He was sentenced to 10 years of probation despite prosecutors asking for 20 years in a state lockup. The 16-year-old, who prosecutors argued is likely to cause still another tragedy if he continues to be insulated by his family’s wealth, will receive therapy at a long-term, in-patient facility, likely at his parents’ expense. His attorneys suggested a California facility that can cost more than $450,000 a year. The judge who sentenced the youth said that the defendant might not get equally effective therapy in a state-run program.
