Law Grad Loses Custody of Son Over Lone Job Offer

A 2011 Cornell Law School graduate has lost custody of her son after accepting a clerkship with a trial judge in New Jersey, the lone job offer she got following a 9-month job search.

The problem? It was located 4.5 hours from her ex-husband’s Ithica, N.Y., home. So reports Above the Law. A joint-custody arrangement with the newly-minted lawyer’s ex-husband barred her son’s relocation without both parents’ consent and a custody battle ensued.

Citing a lack of sufficient evidence showing that the woman had looked for work in Ithica before accepting the clerkship, or upon its anticipated completion, the New York Appellate Division ultimately refused to reverse a decision granting sole custody of the boy to the child’s father.
