Calif. Law Furthers Efforts of Suicide Prevention Activists

A bill signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown last week requires the state to consider suicide barriers during the construction of new bridges or the rebuilding of a bridge with a known suicide history. So reports the Associated Press.

More than 1,600 known suicides have been committed from the Golden Gate Bridge. A $40 million plan for a stainless steel net to prevent suicides on that bridge was approved in 2008, but no one is funding project. According to Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), the author of the bill that was signed into law last week, suicide deterrents considered during a bridge's planning stages cost significantly less.
