According to the lawsuit, when confederate states were readmitted to the union, they were required to meet certain conditions. However, Mississippi has since eroded protections for black students and, as such, the quality of their education is inferior to wealthy, white students.
The suit names Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, House Speaker Philip Gunn, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, and several members of the Mississippi State Board of Education.
