Feds Thwart AZ Attempt to Import Illegal Lethal Injection Drug

At the Phoenix International Airport, federal agents stopped the shipment of sodium thiopental, an execution drug that is no longer manufactured by FDA-approved companies. So reports the Associated Press.

Since European companies started refusing to sell legal execution drugs several years ago, death penalty states, including Arizona, have struggled to obtain the legal execution drugs. Officials in the Grand Canyon State paid almost $27,000 for the seized sodium thiopental. The AP learned of the drug purchase and seizure from documents released as part of a lawsuit against the Arizona corrections department over transparency in executions.
