Judge Orders Hearing to Determine Chimps’ Right to Freedom

A New York State Supreme Court judge has ordered officials at Stony Brook University to show cause for holding two chimps in captivity. So reports The New York Times.

The hearing will concern whether caged chimpanzees can be considered legal persons and therefore sue for their freedom with the help of human representatives. The order that the judge signed was drafted by the Nonhuman Rights Project, which is advocating for the chimps’ release to an animal sanctuary in Florida.
