Calif. Mandates Free Legal Services for Low-income Residents in Custody Cases

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law requiring free legal counsel for low-income residents with respect to matters of child custody, housing-related issues and probate conservatorships. So reports Jurist.

As such, the California Judicial Council must develop and maintain grants toward that end. "The new law’s change in state statute results in a taxpayer paying a higher tax within the meaning of Section 3 of Article XIII A of the California Constitution," according to the article.
