Target Settles Suit Alleging Background Checks Targeted Minorities

Target Corp. will pay $3.7 million to settle a lawsuit after it was accused of conducting background checks unfairly inhibiting Latino and black applicants. So reports The Star Tribune.

As a result of the agreement, the company will consult with an independent third party regarding changes in Target’s hiring practices, including generating a list of criminal convictions unrelated to work at Target and, as such, will not disqualify a candidate from employment.

Those denied employment due to their responses on criminal background checks dating back to May of 2006 will be given first dibs on interviewing for open jobs, or may seek a financial reward of up to $1,000.
