Suits: College Websites Must Be Accessible to Blind Students

Eight lawsuits have been filed in federal court in recent weeks as lawyers for Emanuel Delacruz, who cannot see, allege the websites of a number of colleges do not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). So reports The New York Times.

The lawsuits claim websites are public accommodations that must comply with the law in the same way physical spaces must be accessible via wheelchair. The 1990 law does not make mention of the Internet, but the Department of Justice, which is charged with enforcing the Act, has issued guidelines regarding web accessibility. Other similar lawsuits had mixed results for the plaintiffs.
