S.C. AG Issues Warning About Settlement Scam

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has issued a warning about an online promotion that was created to trick consumers into thinking they are eligible for tobacco settlement money. So reports the Times and Democrat.

The promotion claims people can claim “thousands of dollars per month” tax-free from a Master Settlement Agreement to be paid by the government. However, this advertisement asks for a credit card number in order to purchase a subscription to a publication with information about tobacco revenue bonds.

Wilson said once a card number is provided, canceling the subscription and obtaining a refund could be difficult. Further “there is no fund for private citizens to apply to receive Master Settlement Agreement funds that come to the State each year,” according to the article.
