Woman Charged with Manslaughter for Encouraging Suicide  

A Massachusetts woman stands accused of manslaughter for allegedly playing a “sick game” and encouraging her boyfriend to kill himself via text message. So reports the Associated Press.

Michelle Carter waived her right to a jury in the case brought after her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, committed suicide. Authorities alleged she egged Conrad on to gain attention as the “grieving girlfriend.” The defense argued, however, Roy was “depressed after his parents' divorce, was physically and verbally abused by family members,” and on a path toward suicide for years.

The case is being tried in juvenile court as Carter was 17 when Roy took his life. However, she faces an adult punishment if she is convicted.
