Apple Loses Once-in-a-Century Patent Case to Samsung

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samsung in its smartphone patent battle with Apple, reversing a decision that called for a $399 million penalty for Samsung. So reports Entrepreneur.

This was the first design patent case to reach the Supreme Court in more than 120 years, and in an 8-0 ruling, the case was remanded to a lower court. Apple contested Samsung copied iPhone design elements and, as such, was awarded damages. However, Samsung may now seek to get back some money already paid to Apple after the court ruled a patent violator is not automatically on the hook for all profits earned from a product using copied designs if the designs only pertain to part of the product.
