Court Permits Psychiatric Patient to Refuse Food

An unnamed New Jersey woman committed to a psychiatric hospital has been granted by a judge the right to refuse food. So reports the Associated Press.

The woman, identified as A.G., is "severally anorexic," weighs 69 pounds and has been a patient at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital for the last two years. The judge granted her request for care to relieve pain while allowing her to forego force feeding.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office argued the woman is not "mentally competent" due to chronic depression and noted she could be treated with an experimental drug. Doctor's testified her conditional is terminal, while the attorney general's office contended that assertion.
