Jury Largely White in Trial of S.C. Ex-cop Who Killed Black Man

The murder trial of former South Carolina officer Michael Slager features six white men, five white women and one black man. The defense struck nine potential jurors, including seven who are minorities. So reports the Associated Press.

According to information released from Charleston County, the pool of 75 qualified jurors featured 16 black potential jurors, just over 20% of the pool. Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau cited in the article show the black population in South Carolina and the county is approximately 28%.

Slager, who is white, was charged with murder after shooting and killing Walter Scott, a black man, as he fled a traffic stop. The incident was recorded on a cellphone by an onlooker.
