While a large portion of the state’s residents use the mail to cast ballots, Native American reservations are often isolated and lack postal service. Many Native Americans rely on voting groups to transport their ballots, but the lawsuit claims the new law severely restricts that process. However, Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton said it was passed with wide support from residents, including indigenous people.
