ACLU Defends HBO's John Oliver After Harsh Segment on Coal Tycoon

The American Civil Liberties Union has come to the defense of comedian John Oliver after one his HBO show's segments poking fun at coal magnate Bob Murray yielded a lawsuit. So reports Vanity Fair.

The West Virginia arm of the ACLU has filed a "colorful" amicus brief defending Oliver's free speech rights. Murray took special exception when Oliver compared him to the Austin Powers villain Dr. Evil.

The ACLU rebutted, though, reminding the court "truth is an absolute defense to a claim of defamation" and noted the coal tycoon’s physical appearance and comments. HBO, Time Warner, Oliver, and the show's writers have all been named in the lawsuit.
