Georgia Gov. Signs Bill to Tighten Penalties for Harming First Responders

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed new measures into law aimed at enhancing protections for firefighters and police officers. So reports The Hill.

police 4858592 640House Bill 838 creates a new crime with respect to harming or causing the death of police, firefighters and EMS workers. The bill will also allow police officers to sue those who knowingly file “false complaints against them,” among other things.

The ACLU of Georgia, though, warned that the language of the bill “could result in someone who killed an officer, which carries a life sentence, only serving five years under H.B. 838,” according to the article.
