Pierce, the 14th president and only one to hail from New Hampshire, never owned slaves and said he was morally opposed to slavery. However, he opposed efforts to end slavery over fears it would destroy the union.

Faculty members voted in support of removal after students raised objections to the name, although the school is seeking additional input before making a final decision.
