SCOTUS New Questioning Procedures Bucked By Sotomayor in Immigration Case

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor prematurely interrupted an attorney arguing before the court, seemingly breaking the court’s newly instituted “two minute rule.” So reports The Hill.

Attorneys, under new rules instituted for the recently commenced Supreme Court term, allow advocates two minutes to speak without being asked a question by a justice. Sotomayor, during an immigration case, was told by Chief Justice John Roberts her question would need to wait until the attorney was done with the allotted time. The case was in regards to Kansas’ ability to prosecute migrants under identity theft statute considering the existence of certain federal law.
