Texas Law Cracking Down on ‘Sanctuary Cities’ Blocked

A federal judge temporarily blocked large portions of Texas’ strict anti-“sanctuary cities” law that would give police the power to inquire about resident’s immigration status during routine encounters. So reports The New York Post.

The law also calls for law enforcement to honor federal requests to keep those jailed in custody even if they are arrested on charges unrelated to their immigration status. U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia issued the ruling preventing the law from taking effect.

Opponents say it violates the U.S. Constitution and some argued it could lead to a labor shortage. San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Houston joined the lawsuit.
