D.C., Maryland File New 'Emoluments' Suit

The District of Columbia and state of Maryland are suing President Donald Trump, alleging the President violated the Constitution's Foreign Emoluments Clause. So reports CNN.

The clause prohibits the President from receiving payments from foreign governments absent the consent of Congress. The suit cites the President’s hotel properties and golf courses, among others, as sources of conflict.

Washington, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine alleges that foreign governments are spending money at Trump properties in order to curry favor with the President. Maryland and Washington also allege businesses that must compete against the President’s properties are at a disadvantage.

The suit also states tax breaks and permits count as emoluments. Trump’s camp claims the lawsuit, brought by Democrats, is politically driven.
