The Senate recently voted to expand the reach of the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 1994 to specify that: (1) victim’s rights and prosecution programs created by the law can be used in cases of domestic abuse involving same-sex couples; and (2) tribal courts may pursue non-Indians who attack Indian woman on tribal land, according to a recent New York Times article.
The bill got bipartisan support, and was reauthorized twice before with little controversy. This time, however, it became mired in the broader issues of gay rights and government size. Since the vote, President Obama has called on the House to act.
