The Virginia Supreme Court held that, based on DNA evidence that failed to identify Harward’s genetic profile in sperm left at the crime scene, Harward did not kill Jesse Perron or rape Perron’s wife in 1982. Harward’s conviction was based, in large part, on expert testimony matching his teeth to the bite marks on the rape victim’s leg. Courts still consider bite-mark evidence, but its reliability is controversial.
