Claiming that she was embarrassed of her naked body, the 25-year-old Newland convinced her victim, also 25, to wear a blindfold during the approximately 10 times they had sexual encounters. Newland claims her accuser knew she was a woman and that they were just role playing as both struggled with their sexuality.
Newland’s sentencing will be set at a future date, and she has been ordered to live in the meantime at an address provided by the court. The judge in the case said that the sentencing guidelines clearly require imprisonment, but that he will “need a good deal of further examination before [he] take[s] that final step.”
