The minister, Rev. Juan D. McFarland, confessed to having used drugs and having affairs with several parish women without telling them he had AIDS.

Before the lawsuit was filed, Rev. McFarland had just refused the parish deacons’ request that he leave and had changed the church building's locks and the numbers on the church's bank account.
