Utah Ruling May Force SCOTUS' Hand on Same-Sex Marriage

The same-sex marriage issue is likely to wind up back in front of the U.S. Supreme Court a lot sooner than everyone thought. So The New York Times Report.

Officials in Utah are asking the justices to block a trial judge’s decision last week to make same-sex marriage legal in that state. In the short term, the high court will have to decide whether to block the Utah ruling legalizing homosexual unions while appeals proceed. But appeals of the Utah decision itself make it entirely possible that the Supreme Court will finally be forced to determine the constitutionality of state prohibitions of same-sex marriage as soon as June 2015.

Update per Time: On Jan. 6, the Supreme Court granted an emergency request to halt same-sex marriage in Utah while another court considers state official's appeal of the order that effectively legalized gay marriage in the state.
