SCOTUS: Excess Fine Clauses Applies to States Too

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled the constitutional ban on “excess fines” applies to both states and the federal government. So reports Reuters.

The decision could impact property seizures and financial penalties. The justices unanimously ruled in favor of Tyson Timbs, who said police infringed upon his rights by seizing a $42,000 Land Rover after his heroin conviction. Timbs' case was backed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Civil Liberties Union.
