Should Pets Have Lawyers?

New Jersey state Assemblywoman Annette Quijano has proposed a law to give dogs and cats legal representation in court. So reports PIX 11.

John DeCando, chief animal control officer for the city of Paterson, said during his time prosecuting animal abuse cases, he has found that abusers often do not get anywhere near the maximum legal punishment. He argues in favor of animal advocates.

The bill is modeled after a Connecticut law called "Desmond’s law," which was named after a dog that was killed by its owner.
