Graffiti Artists Sue Developer for Destroying Their Work

A New York City jury found a real estate developer acted illegally by tearing down the 5Pointz complex in Queens as the building was home to graffiti murals considered “art” spayed onto its walls. So reports The New York Times.

The jury’s determination will be sent to a federal judge in Brooklyn for a final ruling. The graffiti artists who spray-painted the walls of the buildings filed a lawsuit accusing the developer of violating the Visual Artists Rights Act, which protects certain public artwork created on another’s property.

The artists claim they were not given the appropriate 90-day notice before their work was destroyed.
