Spotify to Dole Out $43M in Rightsholders Settlement

Spotify will pay $43.4 million to settle a copyright lawsuit after the company was accused of distributing songs without paying for “mechanical licenses.” So reports Forbes.

Musician David Lowery, singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick and two other plaintiff’s suits were consolidated last year. A representative from Spotify said the company was having trouble confirming rightsholders because data was often “missing, wrong or incomplete,” contributing to the lack of payments.

As a result of the suit, Spotify and other streaming services will be “held accountable” by audits and “Settlement Claim Facilitators,” the article reads.
