New Court System to Allow Patent Enforcement Across EU

 

It will soon be possible to enforce patent rights in 24 of the 27 countries in the European Union in one fell swoop and collect EU-wide damages for patent infringement thanks to a new system of courts that may be up and running as soon as 2014.

In every EU country other than Poland, Spain, and Bulgaria, courts made up of a three-judge panel will oversee so-called "European Patents" that are granted by the European Patent Office, and intellectual property that has been granted a new "unitary patent" that will go into effect when the courts are working.
