The Bernards Township will pay $1.75 million for attorney’s fees and $1.5 million for damages after a settlement was agreed upon. The ISBR and Department of Justice each sued the town and the settlement serves to satisfy both cases.
The township denied that refusal to issue a building permit was discriminatory. However, a statement by U.S. attorney William Fitzpatrick stated the town was found to have treated the potential mosque “differently” from other religious buildings.
