Lawsuit Alleges Miss. Education Hasn’t Lived up to Civil War-era ‘Readmissions Act’  

A federal lawsuit filed in Mississippi by the Southern Poverty Law Center on behalf of four parents alleges the Jackson Public School District and the Yazoo City Municipal School District are not providing a mandatory “uniform system of free public schools,” as required by federal law. So reports NBC News.

According to the lawsuit, when confederate states were readmitted to the union, they were required to meet certain conditions. However, Mississippi has since eroded protections for black students and, as such, the quality of their education is inferior to wealthy, white students.

The suit names Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, House Speaker Philip Gunn, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, and several members of the Mississippi State Board of Education.
