Wal-Mart Employees to Share $7.5M After Same-sex Partner Insurance Suit

A federal judge approved a $7.5 million class action settlement between retail giant Wal-Mart and former employees regarding insurance benefits for the employees’ gay and lesbian spouses. So reports an NBC News 2.

Approximately 380 claims were made after same-sex partners of the stores’ employees were unable to get health insurance from 2011-2013. Store associate Jacqueline Cote, of Massachusetts, said she was denied medical insurance for her wife, sparking the case. Cote was represented by GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs and “private law firms.”
