Judge Rejects Settlement Over NYPD Muslim Surveillance

After a judge rejected a settlement in October related to the New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslims, the NYPD has agreed to stricter oversight of its intel programs. So reports The New York Times.

A federal judge said the last settlement “did not go far enough to address the city’s ‘systemic inclination’ to ignore rules protecting free speech and religion.” The new plan gives additional power to a civilian monitor, who would have the ability to question investigations and report issues to the court.

The proposed settlement does not prohibit investigative tactics currently permitted, and the city denied any wrongdoing.
