Lawmakers Try to Alter Status of Children Conceived Via Artificial Insemination

A pair of Tennessee lawmakers proposed altering part of a state law regarding the legitimacy of artificially inseminated children, and some say the move is targeted at the children of homosexual couples. So reports NBC News.

Some opponents fear altering the law might “prevent both same-sex parents from appearing on the children's birth certificates,” impacting their ability to make decisions. Another proposed bill, which has also drawn criticism, is aimed at eliminating “gender neutral interpretations” for "mother," ''father," ''husband," and "wife."

State Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver said the bill addressing artificial insemination is not directed at same-sex marriages, and said another state law adequately addresses parentage irrespective of how the child was conceived.
