‘Serial’ Subject Requests Release Prior to New Trial

A lawyer representing Adnan Syed, awaiting retrial for the slaying his high school girlfriend, has filed a motion asking to be released from prison while awaiting his new trial. So reports the Time.

Justin Brown, Syed’s lawyer, said he poses “no danger to the community” and already served 17 years for a crime he didn’t commit. Syed was the convicted of murdering Hae Min Lee and his story was featured in the inaugural season of the “Serial” podcast. He was granted retrial because his attorney failed to cross-examine an expert witness regarding cell tower data linking him to the scene of the crime and failing to call a witness who could have bolstered his alibi.
