Man Sells Printer Online, Hit with Astronomical Lawsuit

Doug Costello sold a printer for $40 in 2009, and as a result found himself hit with a massive lawsuit and thousands of dollars in legal fees. So reports USA Today.

The printer's buyer was Gersh Zavodnik, an Indianapolis man described by the courts as a “frequent lawsuit filer” and a "prolific, abusive litigant." In March 2015, though, Special Judge J. Jeffrey Edens awarded Zavodnik $30,044.07 for Costello’s breach of contract related to the sale, but upon appeal the ruling was overturned.

Zavodnik also sought $300,000 and $600,000 for admissions related to conspiring with a judge and liability. According to the article, Costello did not respond to those requests for admissions and, by default, accepted them. He said, though, he never received the requests or was not notified of a hearing. A judge ultimately sided with Costello. Another hearing regarding Zavodnik’s compliance with Indiana’s rules of procured is pending.
