American Gets 15 Years in N. Korean Prison for Trying to Steal Sign

A University of Virginia undergraduate student was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by a North Korean court for allegedly attempting to steal a banner while he was traveling in the country’s capital. So reports CNN.

Otto Frederick Warmbier, 21, was arrested in January as he was about to board a plane on his way home from Pyongyang, where he had taken a trip organized by the China-based travel company Young Pioneer Tours. The North Korean government charged Warmbier with committing a hostile act against the state—specifically, taking down a political slogan from his hotel. At his trial in mid-March, Warmbier begged for clemency. Longtime diplomat and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are reportedly lobbying for his release.
