SCOTUS: Arizona Can’t Make Voters Produce Citizenship Docs

The U.S. Supreme Court last week held that Arizona may not require people to provide documents proving citizenship in order allow them to register to vote, according to The New York Times.

The opinion, Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, was written by Justice Scalia, who said the Arizona law was displaced by the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which allows voters to register using a federal form that asks, “Are you a citizen of the United States?” and requires prospective voters to swear upon penalty of perjury that they are citizens.
